abstain

Definition

  • verb: to choose not to do or have something
  • verb: to refrain deliberately and often with an effort of self-denial from an action or practice
  • usually + 'from'

Examples

  • I need to 'abstain from' eating [=I need to not eat] for at least 12 hours before my blood test.
